WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College soccer earned a 1-0 NEWMAC victory over Smith College on Saturday afternoon.
First-year Hillary Gonzalez (Saratoga, Calif.) broke a scoreless tie with less than four minutes to play with a first collegiate tally. Gonzalez took a shot from 25 yards out that snuck in under the crossbar and over the leaping Smith keeper for the lone goal of the contest.Â
A few plays earlier, Wellesley thought they had the first goal when sophomore Isabella Tolosa (Santa Clara, Calif.) sent a ball towards the target from a similar spot. Unfortunately, the shot hit directly off the crossbar and the goalie was able to cover it up.Â
Senior Riley McNair (Cupertino, Calif.) earned the clean sheet victory for the Blue (5-4-1 Overall, 2-1-0 NEWMAC) with six saves. The shutout is the seventh of McNair's career, tying her for 10th all-time in program history.
Senior Sky Smith (Carlisle, Mass.) also played well in net for the Bears (1-7-1 Overall, 0-3-0 NEWMAC) with nine saves.Â
The Blue finished the match with a 24-9 advantage in shots, 11-6 on target.Â
Next up, Wellesley travels to Boston to square off with Emerson College in a NEWMAC contest at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, October 8. Smith hosts Mount Holyoke College at 4:00 PM on the same day.
