WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.) scored both goals for Wellesley College field hockey, including the overtime winner, in a 2-1 triumph over NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College at Butler Stadium on Tuesday night. The Blue have now won three straight, improving to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in NEWMAC competition.
The Blue had several penalty corner chances in the extra period. Ultimately, the offensive pressure paid dividends when junior Alex Butulis (Raleigh, N.C.) set up Summers, who tucked the shot into the lower side of the cage. Summers has now scored in four consecutive contests for Wellesley.
The Lyons (4-7 Overall, 0-4 NEWMAC) took the initial lead, scoring 3:56 in the second quarter. Junior Diane Lee (Boston, Mass.) redirected a hit from first-year Zoey Candito (Belchertown, Mass.) into the lower left side of the cage.
Summers had a chance to knot it up at 1-1 in the second quarter with a penalty stroke. However, Mount Holyoke keeper Ainsley Gruener (Topsfield, Mass.) stopped the attempt.
Wellesley got the equalizer with just over six and a half minutes left in regulation. Summers took a penalty insert from classmate Annika Schermerhorn (Clifton Park, Mass.) and ripped a shot from the left side of the circle that found the mark.
Gruener earned six saves for the visitors while sophomore Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) stopped three of four shots on goal in the win.
The Blue attempted 16 total shots and limited the Lyons to six. Wellesley held an 11-4 penalty corner advantage.
On Saturday, October 11, both teams are on the road for conference games. The Blue play a 12:00 PM game at Springfield. The Lyons are at WPI for a 3:00 PM start.
