WATERVILLE, Maine – Wellesley College basketball fell 71-48 to host Colby College on the second day of the Gene DeLorenzo Tip Off Tournament on Sunday.
Junior Kate Olenik (Medfield, Mass.) was key for the Mules (2-0) with 19 points and four made three pointers. Classmate Amelia Hanscom (Andover, Mass.) had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. First-year Emily Ryan (Middletown, R.I.) assisted on six additional baskets.
The Blue (2-2) saw 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting from first-year Hailey Moy (San Francisco, Calif.). Sophomore Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) tacked on 11 points with eight boards. Junior Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) had the team-high mark of five assists with a pair of blocks.
A three from sophomore Proud Techarungchaikul (Bangkok, Thailand) put Wellesley up 7-3 two and a half minutes into the contest. Colby quickly countered with a 5-0 swing to grab the lead back. The Mules surged forward, crafting an 11-2 run and building an 18-9 lead with 3:16 left in the opening frame. By the end of the first, Colby led 24-13.
The second quarter was competitive, with the hosts outscoring the visitors 15-14 in the period to go up 39-27 at the half. Wellesley briefly trailed by 15 at 35-20 before ending the quarter on a 7-4 run with five points from Moy.
The third quarter proved defensive, with Colby ultimately growing its margin to 52-37. Moy hit a pair of jumpers in the latter parts of the stanza for the Blue.
Colby put the game out of reach in the fourth, with the lead hitting as high as 24 at times.Â
Next up, Wellesley competes at Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday, November 25 at 7:00 PM. Meanwhile, Colby hosts Rivier University at 6:00 PM on Thursday, November 20.
