WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey opened its 2025 season with a 1-0 setback to No. 22 Swarthmore College under the lights on Friday night at Butler Stadium.
The Garnet (1-0) earned the only score of the game seven minutes into the first quarter. First-year Liza Semenenko (Windlesham, England) found sophomore Erin Coyle (Haverford, Pa.) on a pass and Coyle tucked a shot through the outstretched Wellesley goalie.
First-year goalie Katelyn Hurt (Carrollton, Texas) maximized the debut for the Blue (0-1), sending back 10 out of 11 shots on goal.
Semenenko nearly doubled Swarthmore's lead on a redirect early in the fourth. However, Wellesley junior defender Marguerite Greene (Boston, Mass.) made an athletic defensive save to keep it a 1-0 contest.
The visitors outshot the hosts 25-2. Swarthmore attempted eight penalty corners while Wellesley earned a pair of its own.
Next up, the Blue travel to No. 2 Tufts University for a 6:00 PM showdown on Tuesday, September 2. The Garnet will complete the trip up north tomorrow at 12:00 PM versus No. 7 Babson College.
