WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College soccer opened up the 2025 season on Saturday with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Simmons University. Saturday marked Head Coach Greg Margolis' first win at the helm of the Blue.
The Blue (1-0) got on the board at the 19:42 mark before pouring in four goals in the second half. Wellesley's offense controlled the pace of the game, as evidenced by the team's 27-1 advantage in shots taken.
Sophomore Lucille Sugarman (Western Springs, Ill.) got the hosts out in the front with Wellesley's first goal of the season. Sugarman collected a rebounded shot and fired the ball into the lower left corner.
Sophomore Solveig Unteroberdoerster (Washington, D.C.) upped the lead to 2-0 just 2:15 into the second half, taking a pass from classmate Emma Hogarth (Chandler, Ariz.) and finding the goal.Â
Seven minutes later, junior Mae Nephew (Duluth, Minn.) tallied a first career goal, converting a penalty kick with a lower left side placement.
Last year's scoring leader, Olivia Chow-Gillette (Dallas, Texas), got in on the action with a goal at 60:42, assisted by senior Alisha Faheem (New York, N.Y.).
Wellesley added its final notch with less than six minutes remaining in the contest. Junior Mia Shanafelt (Mercer Island, Wash.) capitalized on a breakaway opportunity, set up by a pass from sophomore Isabella Tolosa (Santa Clara, Calif.).
Blue senior Riley McNair (Cupertino, Calif.) and first-year Olivia Lore (Blue Bell, Pa.) earned the combined shutout for Wellesley. McNair stopped one shot.
Sophomore Mikaela Marie Javar (Pearl City, Hawaii) had a busy day for the Sharks (0-1), making eight saves across 90 minutes of action.
The Blue will remain home on Wednesday, September 3 versus Endicott College at 4:00 PM. Simmons plays on the road at 7:00 PM against Massachusetts Maritime Academy that same day.
