NORTON, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey dropped a competitive 2-1 NEWMAC contest versus Wheaton College on Saturday at Diane Nordin '80 Athletic Field. The win brings the Lyons back to .500 at 4-4 on the season and 1-1 in NEWMAC play. The Blue fell to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
First-year Molly Braica (New Boston, N.H.) played a critical role for Wheaton, stopping 10 shots on goal while senior Abby Miller (Andover, Mass.) made a defensive save.
Sophomore Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) stopped one shot in 30 minutes of action. First-year Katelyn Hurt (Carrollton, Texas) didn't face any shots in the second half.
25 seconds into the second quarter, the Blue found the back of the cage. Sophomore Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.) connected on a second goal of the season while classmate Rachel Carson (Mays Landing, N.J.) recorded the assist.
The Lyons struck back with its own goal just under four minutes later. Junior Hannah Fortin (South Dartmouth, Mass.) registered a fourth goal of the year to equalize the game.
With just 43 seconds on the clock in the second quarter, the hosts snatched the lead, courtesy of an unassisted goal from senior Riley Levrault (Lakeville, Mass.). That goal proved to be the difference between the teams, with Wellesley unable to find a second goal.
The Blue recorded an 18-4 advantage in shots taken and took 10 penalty corners. Wheaton attempted five penalty corners.
Up next, Wellesley heads over to Nichols College for a non-conference game at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, October 1. The Lyons will welcome WPI in a NEWMAC contest at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 30.
