SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College basketball won its NEWMAC opener, 48-33, over Mount Holyoke College at Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium on Saturday. The Blue (7-7 Overall, 1-0 NEWMAC) have now won three games in-a-row.
Sophomore Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) recorded a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double. Junior Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) grabbed 11 boards and dished out six assists. Sophomore Stacy Chen (Minneapolis, Minn.) supplied 10 points.
Senior Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) grabbed 13 rebounds for the Lyons (4-11 Overall, 0-1 NEWMAC). Junior Sofia Francisco (Boston, Mass.) had nine points with 10 rebounds and five blocks.
Wellesley led 12-6 after a defensive first quarter. Wellesley initially went up 10-2 with a pair of baskets from Chen and Shane.
After exchanging baskets over the opening five minutes of the second period, the Blue brought the lead up 19-10 on a corner three from sophomore Emaleena Elson (Irvine, Calif.). From there, Wellesley scored six of the final eight points of half to go into halftime with confidence, up 25-12.
An early and-one from Shane ran the Blue's lead up to 16. After trailing by close to 15 for much of the third, Mount Holyoke used a 5-0 run to get the game back to 10 at 37-27. Shane ended the quarter with another layup, giving the Blue a 39-27 edge with 10 minutes remaining.
The visitors never let the game get back within single digits, closing out a 48-33 victory. The Blue outrebounded the Lyons 45-41. Wellesley recorded 24 points in the paint and 11 second chance points.
Wellesley returns to Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse on Wednesday, January 21 to compete with Emerson College in NEWMAC competition at 7:00 PM. Mount Holyoke plays at that same date and time at Smith College.
