Butulis Scores on Senior Day to Help Field Hockey Beat Springfield, 1-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey won an important 1-0 NEWMAC game on Senior Day over Springfield College at Butler Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the game, the Blue celebrated the accomplishments of its three seniors; Alex Butulis (Raleigh, N.C.), Katie Golla (Oak Park, Ill.) and Marguerite Greene (South Boston, Mass.).

Butulis played the hero role for the Blue (3-9 Overall, 2-3 NEWMAC). Five minutes into the game, a penalty corner led to a string of shots from the Blue. In the chaos of a Springfield defensive save from junior Emma Kibbe (Lunenburg, Mass.), Butulis collected a rebound and knocked in a 12th career score.

Despite several efforts from both teams on penalty corners and a late offensive flurry from the Pride (6-6 Overall, 1-4 NEWMAC), Wellesley refused to let in a goal, holding the 1-0 lead for the last 55 minutes of the game.

Junior Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) stopped all four shots on goal in a shutout effort for Wellesley. Springfield sophomore Sam Orcutt (Forestdale, Mass.) saved five shots over 60 minutes.

Wellesley first-year Zoe Kellner (Columbus, Ohio) helped keep the Blue on the front foot with three shots on goal. The hosts finished the game with an 11-5 shot advantage. The Blue took six penalty corners while the Pride had four.

The Blue will remain at Butler Stadium for an Earn The W Day matchup with No. 16 Endicott College on Wednesday, October 14 at 6:00 PM. The Pride will return to Stagg Field to host Eastern Connecticut State University that same day at 4:00 PM.
