SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Mount Holyoke junior forward MJ Owens (Fairfield, Conn.) tallied a pair of goals to defeat Wellesley College field hockey, 2-0, in a NEWMAC showdown on Tuesday night.
First-year Addie Oakes (Guilford, Conn.) played a key role in the Lyons (9-3 Overall, 1-3 NEWMAC) win with 10 saves. Senior Linnea Alsted (Crownsville, Md.) made a defensive save in the first quarter off a shot from Wellesley junior Rachel Carson (Mays Landing, N.J.).
After a scoreless opening period, the Lyons struck first less than two minutes into the second quarter. Owens recorded a team-leading ninth goal of the season for the hosts.
Owens found the back of the cage again 21 seconds into the third quarter. This marked Owens' second multi-goal game of the season.
Junior Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) made nine saves in the cage for the Blue (2-9 Overall, 1-3 NEWMAC). Both teams attempted 18 shots. The Blue had seven penalty corners while the Lyons attempted six.
On Saturday, October 10, Wellesley returns to Butler Stadium for Senior Day against Springfield College at noon. At the same time, Mount Holyoke will be hosting WPI.
