BABSON PARK, Mass. – Wellesley College basketball fell 70-46 in a NEWMAC game at Babson College's Staake Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Beavers to 14-7 Overall and 6-1 in conference play. The Blue dropped to 9-11 Overall and 3-4 in NEWMAC competition.
Senior Allessia Carlo (Carmel, N.Y.) was Babson's high-scorer with 16 points, including three made shots from behind the arc. Classmate Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.), and sophomores Julia St. Laurent (Greenland, N.H.) and Alessa Mendoza (Yonkers, N.Y.) all finished with 10+ points. Perreault collected a game-best 11 rebounds. Babson shot 25-for-55 as a team (45.5%).
Junior Ava Shane (Plano, Texas) led Wellesley with 14 points, with eight made foul shots. Sophomore Stacy Chen (Minneapolis, Minn.) and first-year Hailey Moy (San Francisco, Calif.) each added 10 points while sophomore Proud Techarungchaikul (Bangkok, Thailand) assisted on four baskets.
Babson led 16-10 after the first quarter. The Beavers scored the first five points of the contest and never relinquished that lead, despite the Blue going back-and-forth after the opening. Chen and Moy each totaled four points in the period for Wellesley.
Wellesley stayed within arm's reach for much of the second quarter, down only 23-20 with 3:55 left in the half after Moy hit a midrange jump shot. Babson ended the half with a pair of triples from Carlo and Perreault to go up 29-20 after 20 minutes of action.
The Beavers came into the second half on a tear, putting up 10 answered points to go up 39-20 halfway through the quarter. By the end of the third frame, Babson's advantage had grown to 52-29.
Babson kept its lead in check throughout an 18-17 fourth quarter to wrap up a 70-46 outing.
Both teams will host a conference contest at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 11. Wellesley takes on Clark University while Babson squares off against Salve Regina University.
