Tennis Improves to 4-0 with Sweep of Bates

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis improved to 4-0 with a 7-0 sweep versus Bates College (1-5) on Sunday at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

A day after shutting out Trinity, junior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) only dropped a single game at No. 2 in a 6-1 masterclass over senior Isabella Saul (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Ava Steinberger (Hockessin, Del.).

Wellesley then locked up the doubles point when senior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) took out junior Iris Westmoreland (New Orleans, La.) and first-year Emelyn Harris (Indianapolis, Ind.), 6-3, at No. 1 doubles.

At no. 3 doubles, sophomores Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.) and Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) went to war with Bates senior Grace LaFountain (New Hartford, N.Y.) and junior Elise Hepburn (Vero Beach, Fla.). The two teams went to a tiebreak, with Wellesley getting the better end of a 7-4 scoreline.

Xu got out ahead in both sets and scored a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Westmoreland at the top singles spot.

Bian followed up with a pair of identical 6-3 sets at No. 4 singles versus Harris.

No. 5 singles was the clinching point for Wellesley. Sophomore Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) outlasted Steinberger in a close first set, 7-5. From there, Buttorff grabbed a 6-2 second set to seal the match.

Corte-Real gritted out a hard-fought 7-5, 6-1 match against Saul in the No. 2 singles spot.

First-year Praslin Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) was in top form in a clear-cut 6-0, 6-1 No. 6 singles triumph over LaFountian.

Patel v Hepburn was the last match to finish at No. 3 singles. Hepburn edged out a 7-5 first set. Patel settled in and won a 7-5 second set to force a third set tiebreaker. Patel rode the momentum to a 10-4 tiebreaker and solidified the sweep for the Blue.

Up next, Wellesley travels to New York University for a 12:00 PM match on Saturday, March 7. Bates hosts Tufts University at 2:00 PM that same day.
