BRONX, N.Y. – No. 24 New York University dealt No. 22 Wellesley College tennis its first loss of the season with a 6-1 score at Stadium Tennis Center on Saturday. The win moves the Violets to 3-2 while the Blue fall to 4-1.
Wellesley opened up doubles with a 6-0 shutout at the No. 3 line. Sophomores Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) and Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) blanked sophomores Vera Bondarenko (Surrey, England) and Siona Vallabhaneni (Paradise Valley, Ariz.).
The Violets captured No. 2 doubles with a 6-2 score. NYU sophomores Emma Kast (Hong Kong, Hong Kong) and Victoria Wang (Markham, Ontario) delivered the victory against Blue junior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.).
The doubles point came down to No. 1 doubles. While Wellesley senior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) were tied 4-4 with first-years Visnja Gusavac (Danville, Ga.) and Sophia Yang (Las Vegas, Nev.), the Violets won the final two games and with it went up 1-0 for the match.
Yang added to NYU's day with a 6-3, 6-2 performance over Patel at No. 3 singles. Bondarenko followed suit at No. 4, defeating Bian with 6-1 and 6-4 sets.
Gusavac clinched the match for the hosts at No. 2 by winning every game against Blue sophomore Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.).
No. 13 ranked Wang kept the momentum going at the No. 1 line, earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Xu.
The Blue got on the scoreboard at No. 6 singles. First-year Praslin Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) took a commanding lead early and never looked back in a 6-2, 6-1 victory versus senior Aditi Narayan (Bangalore, India).
At No. 5 singles, Pak and Vallabhaneni engaged in a tooth-and-nail battle. The Violets won the first set 7-6(5) in a set with zero breaks. Vallabhaneni locked up the win with a 6-3 second set.
Wellesley's next match comes on spring break in San Antonio, Texas against Colorado College on Monday, March 16. NYU is back in action tomorrow against RIT.
