No. 22 Tennis Falls 5-2 to No. 36 Colorado College

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 36 Colorado College rebounded after losing doubles and took five of six singles matches in a 5-2 match with No. 22 Wellesley College tennis on Monday during Spring Break in Texas. The Tigers improve to 7-2 while the Blue fall to 4-2.

Senior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) gave the Blue a strong 6-2 performance at No. 1 doubles, defeating sophomores Lucia Moravek (Gig Harbord, Wash.) and Aspen Young (Niceville, Fla.).

At No. 3 doubles, senior Lindsay Popeo (Needham, Mass.) and junior Avery Hickman (Fort Collins, Colo.) leveled the score by picking up a 7-5 win over Wellesley sophomores Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) and Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.).

It all came down to No. 2 for the doubles point. After leading 6-5, Wellesley junior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) broke when it mattered most to overtake junior Kala Komanduri (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Ally Lowe (Arvada, Colo.), 7-5, and scored the point for the Blue.

The Tigers struck back with Komanduri taking down Patel, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.

Bian put the Blue back up with a straight-set, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Hickman in the No. 4 singles spot.

Colorado College returned fire with wins at both No. 1 and 5 singles. Buttorff won a 6-2 first set off of Moravek at No. 5 before the Tigers' sophomore took the second and third sets with identical 6-3 lines. Young followed suit, getting past Xu at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

Popeo put the finishing touches on the win for Colorado College, winning a three-setter against Sarav at No. 6. Popeo took the first 6-3 before Sarav fired back with a one-sided 6-1 second set. Popeo regained composure to earn a 6-3 third set for the match win.

Lowe closed out the match by defeating sophomore Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.), 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2

Up next, Wellesley plays host No. 12 Trinity University (Texas) on Wednesday, March 18 at 4:00 PM EST. Colorado College takes on Trinity tomorrow at that same time.
