SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 22 Wellesley College tennis dazzled in a 7-0 sweep of Concordia University Texas in the finale of Spring Break matches on Thursday. The win moves the Blue to 5-3 this week while the Tornados drop to 3-5.
The match opened with the Blue sweeping doubles. No. 3 doubles set the tone. Sophomores Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.) and Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) won all six games against juniors Reagan Branum (Midland, Texas) and Emmy Mize (Houston, Texas).
No. 2 doubles followed suit with a 6-3 triumph. Junior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) continued their winning ways against first-years Kailey Albrecht (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Alyssa Estrella (Clear Lake, Texas).
Senior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) completed the doubles victories at No. 1 by taking down senior Aria Moreni (Allen, Texas) and sophomore Valerie Sanchez (Plano, Texas), 7-5.
Wellesley took all six singles matches in straight sets. Juniors Lily Cade (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Veda Madhusudan (Short Hills, N.J.) didn't lose a single game in 6-0, 6-0 performances and No. 5 and 6 singles respectively.
Junior Dalia Khera (Houston, Texas) was near-perfect at No. 4, dropping only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 showing versus Estrella.
Xu made quick work of Sanchez at the No. 1 line, winning a 6-0, 6-3 match.
No. 2 singles saw sophomore Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) control a 6-2, 6-1 match with Moreni.
Sarav finished off the shutout at No. 3 singles, winning convincing 6-2 and 6-3 sets over Albrecht.
Next up, Wellesley returns home to host Springfield College in a NEWMAC match on Sunday, March 29 at 12:00 PM. Concordia welcomes Austin College at 2:00 PM tomorrow.
