No. 34 Tennis Tops No. 43 Smith, 5-2

WELLESLEY, Mass. – No. 34 Wellesley College tennis swept doubles and won four of six singles matches in a 5-2 NEWMAC triumph over No. 43 Smith College on Saturday at The Amy Batchelor '88, Trustee, Tennis Courts.

The Blue (8-4 Overall, 3-1 NEWMAC) started the day by taking all three doubles' lines. Junior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) got the team going with a 6-2 victory over junior Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore Natazya Simunyola (Lorton, Va.) at No. 2. 

No. 1 doubles followed with a 6-4 win. Senior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) earned the point versus first-year Ava Emrich (Smyrna, Del.) and Heidi Cambron (Sherbrooke, Canada).

Sophomores Rianna Mariotti (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) completed the sweep at No. 3, defeating first-years Olivia Chin (Bayside, N.Y.) and Emily Wang (Westford, Mass.), 6-4.

Sarav made it 2-0 for the hosts by taking down Chin, 6-0, 6-4, at the No. 6 spot.

The Bears (5-7 Overall, 2-2 NEWMAC) recorded a point at No. 2 singles with Emrich earning a pair of 6-3 sets over sophomore Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.).

Bian pushed the Blue back in command, 3-1, by winning a decisive 6-2, 6-2 match against Simunyola at No. 4 singles.

Xu proved to be the clinching point for Wellesley, taking the top line 6-1, 6-4 over Hauser.

Blue sophomore Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) overcame a 6-4 loss in the first set of No. 5 singles to defeat senior Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, Texas) in the next two sets, 6-3, 6-0.

Cambron ended the day with a three-set win for Smith over Patel at No. 3 singles. Cambron won the first 7-6(2), before Patel rallied to take a 7-5 second. Ultimately, Cambron picked up a 10-7 tiebreaker win to make the final score 5-2.

Wellesley remains home tomorrow for an 11:00 AM senior day match with Skidmore College. Smith returns home to face Springfield College at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, April 14.
