No. 34 Tennis Picks Up 6-1 Win over Skidmore on Senior Day

WELLESLEY, Mass. – No. 34 Wellesley College tennis ran its win streak to three with a 6-1 match with Skidmore College on Sunday at The Amy Batchelor '88, Trustee, Tennis Courts.

Prior to the match, the Blue (9-4) recognized the contributions of senior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.).

Skidmore had to forfeit No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles so the match opened up 1-0 in favor of Wellesley.

The Thoroughbreds (4-11) made up for being down a line in doubles by taking the No. 1 match, 6-2. First-years Amelie Gonzalez (San Juan, P.R.) and Ginerva Muratori (Como, Italy) won the final four games over Pak and junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.).

No. 2 doubles decided which team went into singles with a one-point edge. Blue junior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) utilized a break to go up 5-3 and held on for a 6-4 win against junior Ruth Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio) and first-year Ellie Lake (Annapolis, Md.) to ensure Wellesley an early match advantage.

Skidmore defaulted the No. 6 singles spot making it an automatic 2-0 for the Blue.

At No. 5 singles, sophomore Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) faced little resistance with identical 6-1 sets against sophomore Maeve O'Brien McKevitt (New York, N.Y.).

Bian quickly followed by locking up the match in a convincing 6-0, 6-1 showing over Wilson.

Lake gave Skidmore a point at the No. 3 line, notching a close 7-5 set over sophomore Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) before taking a 7-1 second.

Xu and Muratori duked it out at No. 1 singles. Muratori nabbed a one-sided 6-1 first set, but Xu dug the heels in, fighting off danger to a 7-6(8) second and forcing a third-set decider. Xu came up in the big moments of a 10-6 tiebreaker to earn a point.

Sophomore Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.) and Gonzalez also went three-sets at the No. 2 line. Wellesley took the advantage in the first, putting up a 6-3 on the scoreline. Gonzalez flipped the script in set two, winning the final two games of a 7-5 set. A back-and-forth tiebreaker ensued, with Corte-Real coming out on top, 10-8.

Wellesley returns to action on Saturday, April 18 at Salve Regina University. Skidmore will compete at Saint Lawrence University that same day.
