WELLESLEY, Mass. – No. 36 Wellesley College tennis shutout NEWMAC opponent Clark University, 7-0, on Tuesday at The Amy Batchelor '88, Trustee, Tennis Courts.
The Blue (11-5 Overall, 5-2 NEWMAC) won at all three lines in doubles over the Cougars (5-10 Overall, 0-7 NEWMAC), before taking the six singles matches in straight sets.
Senior Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) swept junior Varvara Maltseva (Tres Cantos, Mass.) and first-year Marcela Goynea (Vienna, Va.) 6-0 at No. 1 doubles to get the Blue started.
No. 2 doubles followed behind, only dropping a single game of a 6-1 win. Junior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) were the victors, defeating junior Olivia Shipley (Winchendon, Mass.) and sophomore Elena Zhakov (Maastricht, Netherlands).
The No. 3 line also saw a 6-1 score. Junior Veda Madhusudan (Short Hills, N.J.) and first year Praslin Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) nabbed the win, taking down senior Crisi Patel (West Lebanon, N.H.) and sophomore Chau Quach (Paxton, Mass.).
Sophomores Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) didn't miss a beat, each registering 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 2 and 3 singles. Patel beat sophomore Larkin Gardinier (Medford, Mass.) at No. 2 while Buttorff was spotless against Goynea.
Junior Dalia Khera (Houston, Texas) won the deciding fourth point at the No. 4 spot, winning a perfect 6-0 first set before adding a 6-2 second versus Shipley.
Sophomore Rianna Mariotti (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and junior Lily Cade (Minneapolis, Minn.) kept the winning ways going at No. 5 and 6 singles, each putting together a pair of 6-1 sets. Mariotti's win came at No. 5 over senior Merielle Kane (Vienna, Maine) and Cade won the No. 6 match with sophomore Amanda Keith (Brookfield, Conn.).
No. 1 singles was the final match of the day, featuring sophomore Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.) and Maltseva for Clark. Corte-Real fended off her opponent with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph.
