WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey opened up the 2026 season with a 3-2 double overtime loss to Colby-Sawyer College on Tuesday night at Butler Stadium.

Less than three minutes into double-overtime, a penalty corner from Colby-Sawyer led to a scramble that allowed sophomore Jillian Fredette (Weare, N.H.) to send the ball over to junior Brooke Farquhar (Gorham, Maine). Farquhar placed a shot past the Blue's keeper in the lower right corner of the cage to close out a 3-2 victory.

The opening 11+ minutes of the contest was primarily played in the middle third as each team settled into the 2026 season. Colby-Sawyer had the first chance of the contest with less than four minutes to go in the first when Farquhar got a shot on cage that was saved by Wellesley sophomore Katelyn Hurt (Dallas, Texas). However, the Chargers were awarded a penalty stroke on the ensuing action. Sophomore Emily Fredette (Weare, N.H.) stepped up but the shot went off the left post to keep the game scoreless. 

With 4:03 to play in the second quarter, Colby-Sawyer was awarded a second penalty stroke of the game. Senior Kylie Walden (Bellingham, Mass.) successfully converted the chance to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.  

The Blue turned up the pressure in the second and outshot Colby-Sawyer 4-1 (3-0 on goal). Wellesley's best chance came in the waning moments of the half on the first penalty corner of the contest. Junior Gabi Chen (Mountain View, Calif.) sent a shot towards the far side of the cage, but sophomore Sophie Krauss (Essex, Vt.) made a kick save to keep Wellesley off the board.

Colby-Sawyer went in front 2-0, 5:31 into the third, when Fredette finished a nice pass from Farquhar. 

The Blue cut the deficit in half with 2:06 to play in the third. Senior Katie Golla (Oak Park, Ill.) set up the scoring chance for first-year Madison Macciocca (West Chester, Pa.) who found the back of the cage for a first collegiate tally in tonight's debut. 

Wellesley carried the momentum into the fourth to even the score at 2-2, less than two minutes into the frame. Sophomore DeeDee McCarron (Melrose, Mass.) beat the goalkeeper to tie the game and record a first collegiate goal. 

The first overtime did not yield any scoring chances for either side. 

Hurt finished with four saves for the Blue (0-1). Krauss had seven stops to earn the win for Colby-Sawyer (1-0). 

Wellesley held a 13-8 edge in total shots for the game. The Blue earned a trio of penalty corners while the Chargers had two.

Up next, the Blue will make the trek to Pennsylvania to take on Bryn Mawr College at 1:00 PM on Sunday, September 6. Colby-Sawyer comes back to Mass. to play at Worcester State University on Saturday, September 5.
