WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey earned a 2-1 victory over Bridgewater State University on a sunny Saturday at Butler Stadium.
The Blue (1-3) struck first late in the opening quarter by taking advantage of a couple of penalty corner opportunities. Sophomore
DeeDee McCarron (Melrose, Mass.) inserted the corner to the top of the circle. Junior
Madeline Hamstra (Houston, Texas) received the ball, took a step inside the circle and ripped a shot past everyone and into the back of the cage for the 1-0 lead.
Wellesley doubled its lead early in the second when the duo of McCarron and Hamstra got involved again. This time, McCarron scored after gathering the ball from a scramble in front of the cage. Hamstra began the action with a shot from just inside the circle that was turned away by the Bridgewater State goalie.
The Bears (1-2) cut the deficit in half with 5:30 to play in the third off a penalty corner. Junior Taylor Carter (East Walpole, Mass.) sent a pass across the top of the box where senior Abbie Zuber (Westport, Mass.) fired a shot through traffic and into the back of the cage to make the score 2-1.
After withstanding a push from the visitors, Wellesley looked to increase its advantage with a flurry of chances late in the game, but Bridgewater State sophomore Aubrey Finn (Marshfield, Mass.) kept the score at 2-1.
The Bears then had a chance to tie the score with less than 30 seconds to play after being awarded a corner, but a shot attempt went wide left to secure the victory for Wellesley.

Katelyn Hurt (Dallas, Texas) earned the win for the Blue with five saves. Finn finished with 10 saves.
Up next, Wellesley will wrap up its three-game homestand on Tuesday, September 15 at 6:00 PM versus University of Southern Maine. Bridgewater State hosts Fitchburg State University at 7:00 PM on the same day.
