WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College swept the final match of
the 2010 Wellesley Volleyball Invitational, posting a 3-0 victory
over SUNY New Paltz on Saturday evening at the Keohane Sports
Center. Set scores were 25-19, 25-11 and 26-24 as the Blue improved
to 14-5 overall and the Hawks fell to 20-8.
The Blue finished with a 3-0 record to take the title at the
event. Ithaca took second, compiling a 2-1 record. New
Paltz finished 1-2, while Endicott went 0-3 on the weekend.
Set one was tightly played with neither team gaining more than a
two-point advantage until Traci
Hamanaka's four-point serving run pushed Wellesley
ahead 15-11. New Paltz battled back to come within one at
16-15, but the Blue pulled away to take the match 25-19.
In set two, Wellesley held a slim 4-2 advantage before an
eight-point run on a Hamanaka serve increased the Blue lead to
12-2. Isabel
Custodio notched four kills during the stretch to back
Wellesley. New Paltz closed the gap to 15-9 on two straight
kills from Dana Kindelmann, but the Hawks would get no closer as
Wellesley won set two, 25-11.
With the score tied at 9-9 in set three, the Hawks used strong
serving from Kindelmann and two kills from Eleanor Skovgaard to
build a 20-15 lead. The Blue battled back to within two at
20-18, but New Paltz once again pushed Wellesley to the ropes,
going ahead 24-22.
Needing only one point to take the set, the Hawks were the
victims of a kill off the arm of Wellesley's Julia Adams combined with their own
attack error, as the Blue got the ball back with a 24-24 tie.
Adams then notched a service ace while Custodio picked up a kill to
complete the set three comeback and give Wellesley the match.
New Paltz was led by Kindelmann's six kills, while Michelle
Jacobson and Melinda DiGiovanna each added five. Brigid Moore
dished out 12 assists, while Kelly Lavender and DiGiovanna each
