WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College golf team notched a
third place finish at their 2010 home tournament, the third annual
Ann S. Batchelder Invitational. Wellesley was led by senior
standout Kim
Eaton who took second place at the event, held at the
par-72, 5,860-yard Nehoiden Golf Course on the campus of Wellesley
College.
Eaton shot a +11, 155 to end the day in second place. She
shaved five strokes off of her day one total of 80, carding a 75 on
day two to move up a spot from third.
Wellesley placed all five top golfers in the top-19 at the
event. After Eaton, the Blue had three golfers finish within
three strokes of each other. Cassandra
Tavolarella tied for 13th place with a 173 (90-83),
Alexis
Kelleher took 16th with a 174 (89-85) and Michelle
Cho notched a 17th-place finish with a 176 (88-88).
Alexandra
Fuiks wrapped up the Wellesley team scorers with a 185
(91-94) to finish in a tie for 19th place.
The Blue also entered four individuals in the event.
Lindsey
Shephardson finished 27th after knocking eight strokes
off of her day one score, while Young
Hsu finished 30th, improving her day one score by 11
strokes. Rounding out the action for Wellesley, Eda
Lee notched a 10-stroke improvement on day two to
finish 32nd overall, while Carrie
Read finished 34th.
Williams took the team title, as the Ephs' total score of 626
bested a field of six teams at the event. They were led by
Alexandra Groetsema who shot a two-day total of 145 (+1) to take
medalist honors. Groetsema shot rounds of 72 and 73, both
tournament lows, to lead Williams to their second-straight win at
the event. The Ephs were also paced by Becky Miller (77-81)
and Georgiana Salant (82-76) who each totaled a +14 score of 158 to
tie for fourth place overall.
Amherst took second place overall with a team score of 670.
The Lord Jeffs were led by Elizabeth Monty's +13 total of 157
(81-76), placing her third individually.
Vassar (358 total) finished fourth, Mount Holyoke (722) nabbed
fifth and Westfield State (839) take took sixth to round out the
team scoring. The Brewers were led by Alex Bello's eighth-place
finish (86-82 +24), while the Lyons were paced by a ninth-place tie
from Alexandra Irish (84-85 +25).
Ann S. Batchelder was a Wellesley faculty member for 38 years,
teaching physical education and also serving as one of the school's
varsity squash coaches. She retired in spring of 2009,
establishing a charitable gift annuity for the Friends of Wellesley
College Athletics. Her generosity created one of the largest
gifts from a member of the College's academic community and will
benefit Wellesley student-athletes for years to come.
