Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass. -- A stingy Wellesley College defense held Simmons University to just nine total shots, en route to a 17-2 Blue victory in non-conference lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.
Wellesley remains a perfect 4-0 with the victory, while Simmons falls in their first action of 2011.
The Blue opened with a terrific first half, building an 11-0 lead at the break. Wellesley held a 20-6 advantage in shots, with goalkeeper Mary Mattia saving all four shots on goal she faced.
Wellesley continued to roll in the second half, scoring six goals, while the Sharks got on the board with two of their own. The Blue held a slim 9-7 advantage in shots, but cruised to the 17-2 final.
Britt Mscisz and Meagan Fuchs each tallied game-highs of five points to lead Wellesley. Mscisz recorded four goals and an assist, while Fuchs picked up three goals and two helpers. Also for the Blue, Allison Robbins scored three times, while Jenny Holland, Elizabeth Clemetson and Kate Lonergan all added three-point performances.
Robbins led the Blue with five ground balls and five draw controls, while Alyssa Andres added four draw controls and Nicole Labbee caused two turnovers. In goal, Mattia finished the day with seven saves and only two goals allowed.
Simmons's offense was paced by goals from Lee Sutherland and Meagan Maurice. Leanne Luke led all players with six ground balls, while Meg Coffey added five ground balls and three caused turnovers. In goal, Kelly Last posted eight saves for the Sharks.
Both teams return to the field on Monday. Wellesley travels to Clermont, FL, for a 10:00am match-up against the University of Scranton, while Simmons hosts Anna Maria under the lights at 7:00pm.
