AMHERST, Mass. -- Wellesley College senior Kim Eaton fired a 78 to take the lead on day one of the 2011 Jack Leaman Women's Golf Championship, hosted by Amherst College at the Hickory Ridge Country Club.
Eaton battled the cold and rain better than any other individual did on Saturday, as her 78 (37-41) gave her a two-stroke lead heading into the clubhouse. Middlebury's Flora Weeks and Methodist's Gretchen McLean each shot an 80 and will begin Sunday in a tie for second place, while Amherst's Hayley Milbourn—the three-time defending Jack Leaman champion—and Liz Monty are tied for fourth at 81.
As a team, Wellesley currently sits in ninth place in the 12-team field. After Eaton, Alexandra Fuiks is tied for 36th place with a 93, while Lindsey Shephardson is tied for 45th with a 97. Young Hsu carded a 97 to head into day two in 52nd, while Michelle Cho shot a 102 and is in 56th place.
The host Lord Jeffs have won the Jack Leaman Championship in each of the past two years, but Methodist University placed four players in the top 10 to hold a six-stroke lead with a 332, six shots better than Amherst's 338. Williams (348), NYU (352) and Vassar (356) rounded out the top five.
The competition will conclude Sunday at The Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass.
