SUFFERN, N.Y. -- The Wellesley College golf team sits in sixth place out of 12 teams after day one of the NYU Invitational. The Blue battled darkness with six-hour rounds at the par-72, 6,008-yard Spook Rock Golf Course.
Wellesley was led by three golfers who shot rounds in the 80's. Sophomores Lindsey Shephardson and Alexandra Fuiks each fired first-round 83's to pace the Blue. Junior Michelle Cho also had a solid start to the tournament, carding an 85.
First-years Alexandria Lee and Michelle Brann also competed, with Lee shooting a 92 and Brann adding a 101.
NYU's Kristina Shalhoup leads the field after a day-one 74, while Georgiana Salant and Flora Weeks of Middlebury are close behind with matching 75's.
In the team scoring, Wellesley's first round total of 343 puts the Blue in sixth place. Williams (311) and Middlebury (319) occupy the top two spots, but Wellesley is within eight strokes of the third, fourth and fifth place teams.
The NYU Invitational continues tomorrow morning.
