Golf Nabs Fifth Place at Home Invitational

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Williams College won the team title at the 2012 Ann S. Batchelder Invitational, hosted by Wellesley College on the par-72, 5,860-yard Nehoiden Golf Course. The Ephs won the two-day event for the third straight time, topping a field of seven institutions.

Williams placed each of their scoring golfers in the top-10 at the event, recording a two-day total of 623. After carding a 316 on day one, they knocked nine strokes off of their total to defeat runner-up Merrimack by 13 strokes. Merrimack recorded rounds of 322 and 314 to finish with a 636.

Amherst and Vassar tied for third place recording identical rounds of 343 and 329, finishing with two-day totals of 672. Host Wellesley took fifth place with a 727, followed by Mount Holyoke (746) and Westfield State (1022). Holy Cross did not compete on day two of the event.

Individually, Williams' Georgiana Salant earned medalist honors for the second year in a row, topping the field of 40 golfers. The junior was one stroke off the lead with a 76 yesterday, but carded a par-72 in today's action to seal the title. Mount Holyoke's Madi Mendiola finished as runner-up for the second straight year, carding a 76 on both days, finishing four strokes behind Salant. Liz Monty of Amherst took third with rounds of 79 and 75.

For host Wellesley, sophomore Alexandria Lee moved up seven spots in the final rankings, shooting a team-low of 80 today. She finished 15th overall with a 172. Junior Alexandra Fuiks and first-year Bristol Gunderson finished in 22nd and 23rd places with Fuiks recording a 182 and Gunderson tallying a 184.

Sophomore Michelle Brann finished with a 189 and in 35th place, while first-year Lei Wei and senior Young Hsu each recorded totals of 194 to tie for 29th place. Rounding out the Blue golfers, Isabella Dougherty finished with a 206, while sophomore Haneen Anbarserri shaved 17 strokes off of her day-one total to end with a 209.

This weekend's tournament marks the end of the fall season for the Blue golfers. The team will be back in action in the spring.

Ann S. Batchelder was a Wellesley faculty member for 38 years, teaching physical education and also serving as one of the school's varsity squash coaches. She retired in spring of 2009, establishing a charitable gift annuity for the Friends of Wellesley College Athletics. Her generosity created one of the largest gifts from a member of the College's academic community and will benefit Wellesley student-athletes for years to come.
