QUEENS, N.Y. -- The Wellesley College fencing team closed out its 2012-13 season competing at the NCAA Northeast Regional on Sunday at St. John's University. The Blue sent seven total fencers to the event, which featured athletes from all NCAA Divisions competing in the same pool.
All seven of the Blue's qualified student-athletes finished their weekend ranked 19th or higher compared to Division III opponents. Wellesley was represented by three foil fencers, in senior Elise Dong, and first-years Eileen Cho and Camille Samulski, two epee fencers, first-year Charlotte Treadwell and sophomore Kathryn Ledbetter, and two sabre fencers, junior Dania Wright and senior Mariami Bekauri.
Leading the way for Wellesley, Treadwell ranked 11th among Division III opponents, finishing her day 36th overall. Wright also ranked high within the Division, ranking 14th, while finishing in 37th place.
Also for the Blue, Dong and Cho finished right behind one another, as Dong ranked 15th in D-III (37th overall) and Cho ranked 16th in D-III (38th overall). Wrapping up the Blue qualifiers, Bekauri finished 16th in Division III (39th overall), Ledbetter ranked 15th in D-III (43rd overall), and Samulski placed 19th in D-III (41st overall).
Each of Wellesley's competitors recorded at least one victory at the event, with several narrowly missing advancing to the second round. Wright missed out on advancing because of the indicator, while Treadwell was just two touches shy of advancing. Dong and Ledbetter also recorded more than one victory for the Blue, falling just short of advancing.
The Wellesley fencing team recorded nine team victories this season and ranked 10th overall at the New England Championships. The Blue's epee squad finished sixth overall in New England, while the sabre squad ranked 12th and foil, 13th.
